Renga is a massive co-operative game for 100 simultaneous players that combines strategic conquest elements from games such as Civilisation with action phases inspired by old-school arcade classics such as Defender. The title refers to a form of collaborative poetry with 100 verses that blossomed in 15th century Japan. The entire audience is able to directly control game elements in parallel using hand-held laser pointers pointed at the screen. The game rewards coordinated pointer movement but allows formations to emerge without advance planning as players observe other points of laser light and join emergent groups, like an improvisational dance.
This unique show has been designed, engineered and delivered for GameCity by John Sear and Adam Russell of wallFour, whose work was described by newsjacking specialist Urgent Genius as "Hyperbolic, interactive, innovative entertainment". Following a recent European tour, the design duo are bringing their revolutionary technology to Nottingham for GameCity 6.
"We've always supported the unique GameCity festival since it was created five years ago," said wallFour co-founder Adam Russell. "It's a great honour to present our new work at an event which celebrates the whole medium of video games and its wider impact on culture."
GameCity is Europe’s biggest and best-loved videogame culture festival. Based in Nottingham's Old Market Square, GameCity is now in its sixth year and takes over the city centre between October 26th-29th 2011. The festival is mostly free to attend and offers events for a variety of audiences from families on their half term break, to indie game fans coming for the sneak previews of upcoming titles.
"I'm delighted that wallFour are able to visit GameCity 6 and share their fantastic experience," said festival director Iain Simons. "Taking innovative techniques that in lesser hands would be but a tech-demo - they've spun an innovative, entertaining and inclusive project which gives an audience a rare opportunity - to interact together. Arrive as a crowd, leave as a community!"
wallFour was created in August 2011 by two videogame industry experts who until recently ran one the of the leading academic games development courses in the world. Prior to that both co-founders worked in triple-A game development on multi-million dollar projects. The company is currently based in the former Silk Mill Industrial Museum as part of the project transforming Derby's museums.
wallFour offers complete end-to-end design and delivery of interactive live event experiences through in-house expertise, ranging from off-the-shelf products to highly custom installations, and specialises in a combination of private corporate functions and interactive public arts events.
