Practicing Yoga brings evil says Vatican's chief exorcist Father Gabriel Amorth, who has carried out thousands of exorcisms in the past 25 years after being appointed by the late Pope John Paul II. He surprised delegates at a conference by revealing his dislike for yoga.

He said "Practising Yoga brings evil as does reading Harry Potter. They may both seem innocuous but they both deal with magic and that leads to evil,".

He further added "Yoga is the Devil’s work. You thing you are doing it for stretching your mind and body but it leads to Hinduism. All these oriental religions are based on the false belief of reincarnation,".

Subodh Gupta says "These comments reflects total ignorance on yoga and eastern culture by Vatican exorcist.

"Actually Hatha Yoga (which is popularly misunderstood as yoga in the west) are simply set of physical exercises which helps to release tension and in focussing the mind.
"The actual purpose of Hatha Yoga is to help concentrate mind and make body healthy so one can prepare to sit for meditation longer (if one wants). Even if somebody practice Hatha Yoga only for physical benefits there is no harm and it has nothing do with any religion.

"Father Amorth comments are completely out of ignorance because perhaps he has never tried Hatha Yoga before.

"All I can say please forgive Jesus as Father Amorth don't know what he is doing out of ignorance. Perhaps Father Amorth can try Hatha Yoga and it can help him to get rid of misconception about Hatha Yoga within first 60 min and he can think clearly."
