Archant staff face redundancy as a result of plans for the Ipswich Evening Star and East Anglian Daily Times to merge production elements.

Planned changes, aimed at 'increasing the efficiency of production processes in particular with regards to online publishing' would not effect newsgathering resources on the two papers, Stuart McCreery, managing director of Archant Suffolk, told Journalism.co.uk.

However, he confirmed that voluntary redundancy packages had been offered to production staff with some taking up the opportunity.

Changes to the production process were needed, he added, to better reflect the changes to join print and online publication.

Martin Chambers, secretary of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) Suffolk branch, fears as many as 20 staff could be laid off as a result of the changes.

Archant would not confirm the likely number of redundancies.

The newspapers are now in a consultation period on the changes with the NUJ, which is expected to end on March 18.
