The PIE is looking for a talented and ambitious Reporter to join our editorial team and help us cover the people, organisations, trends and developments shaping international education.\ This is an opportunity for a journalist who is curious about the world and passionate about telling stories that matter. You’ll report on the international education sector across higher education, English language teaching, student recruitment, policy, mobility and related areas, producing accurate, engaging journalism for The PIE’s global audience. This is a role for an ambitious journalist, with plenty of opportunity to travel.
What you’ll do
- Find, pitch and report original news stories and features across the international education sector.
- Develop a strong network of sources and contacts across the industry, including education providers, governments, policymakers, students, agents and sector organisations.
- Monitor breaking news, policy developments, research and emerging trends, identifying stories that matter to The PIE’s audience.
- Conduct interviews with senior figures and experts, and turn complex issues into clear, compelling stories.
- Attend industry events, conferences and briefings, representing The PIE and developing new contacts.
- Produce accurate copy to tight deadlines, while maintaining The PIE’s editorial standards and voice.
- Contribute ideas to The PIE’s wider editorial output, including newsletters, webinars, podcasts and other digital content.
- Help develop The PIE’s video journalism, including filming, presenting, interviewing and editing short-form video content for digital and social platforms.
- Use social media and other digital platforms to promote and engage audiences with your journalism.
About you
\ You’ll be a journalist with a strong news sense, excellent writing skills and a genuine interest in international education and global affairs. You’ll be comfortable working independently to find stories, while also being a collaborative member of a busy editorial team.\ We’re looking for someone who:
- Has experience working in journalism, ideally in a newsroom or specialist B2B publication or has a recognised qualification (eg BA, MA or PG-Dip from nd NCTJ-accreditted program)
- Has a genuine interest in, or previous experience of, international education, higher education, global mobility or a related field. Personal experience of studying abroad is a bonus.
- Can identify a good story and explain why it matters to readers.
- Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Is confident interviewing people at all levels, from students and practitioners to senior executives and policymakers.
- Can build and maintain a strong network of sources.
- Is able to work quickly and accurately to deadlines.
- Is naturally curious, proactive and willing to ask questions.
- Has a keen interest in video journalism and digital storytelling, with a willingness to develop skills in filming, presenting and editing video for online audiences. Previous experience with video editing would be an advantage.
- Is comfortable working across different formats and digital platforms.
- Understands the importance of accuracy, fairness and editorial integrity.
- Additional language skills would be a benefit, particularly where they can help broaden The PIE’s international coverage and source network.
- Is enthusiastic about working in a genuinely international environment and engaging with people and stories from different countries and cultures.
Experience covering education or another specialist B2B sector would be an advantage, but we’re more interested in your journalistic instincts, curiosity and ability to tell a good story.
