Reuters has launched a commercial website dedicated to pan-African news and financial data.

The agency aims to incorporate country-specific blogs via GlobalVoices into the site as well as providing extensive economic, business and financial news and data, including stock and currency market data and company information.

Reflecting the importance of commodities to many African economies, the site also features exclusive online content on metals and mining, energy and oil, and agricultural commodities.

Reuters' chief correspondent in southern Africa John Chiahemen, who has more than 25 years' experience covering the continent with the agency, has been named editor.

Mr Chiahemen said that the agency's goal was to be the leading online source for African news for both Africans and for the rest of the world

"Reuters Africa will be an essential source for news as Africa becomes more integrated into the global economy.

"As multinational corporations continue to expand their presence on the continent, they increasingly need up-to-date and reliable commodities, economic, political and general news," he said.

Reuters has struck a deal with HSBC as the exclusive advertiser across the site for its launch.

The new site also features an interactive map to access local news across the continent country by country.

In addition, links to Reuters AlertNet are integrated across the site, providing breaking news, images and insight from the world's disasters and conflict areas.
