What is it? A bookmarklet which allows you to see how many times a URL has been shared on social media – and by which journalists – in a single click.

How is it of use to journalists? Ever wondered how many other journalists are sharing your content? Social media aggregator Muck Rack has launched a new tool which allows you to find out in a single click.

The bookmarklet also shows how many times a link has been shared on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon and Google+, and you can use it as a quick and easy way to add content to your Muck Rack portfolio or to a media list.

Launched in 2009, Muck Rack draws content from thousands of journalists who use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other sources to break news on a daily basis. The site boasts an extensive directory of verified journalists from around the world which can be searched by name, publication or even beat.

To install the tool in your web browser, simply drag and drop the button from muckrack.com/bookmarklet, alternatively there is an option to install the bookmarklet on your tablet or mobile.

Users must have a Muck Rack profile to use the tool, which is free for verified journalists. To apply for verification all you need is a valid Twitter account, although the process is vetted to ensure users meet certain standards such as relevant tweets and consistent activity.

Unverified journalists will still be able to see how many social shares a link has had, but not which journalists and bloggers have shared it.
