Seven editorial jobs within Archant 's Herts and Cambs division are at risk of redundancy as its four-edition Scene series is closed.
In an announcement today the publisher revealed this week's editions, published today, will be the last as part of a cost-cutting move.
Consultation on the seven editorial jobs now at risk has begun, although editorial director Paul Richardson said the company is hopeful most of those affected will be redeployed within the organisation. The Scene series , which is said to publish 55,000 copies across East Herts and West Essex, was launched last year to replace the loss-making Herald series.
"Continuing tough market conditions and increasing business costs, including a 25 per cent year-on-year increase in newsprint prices, have meant the management team at Archant Herts & Cambs decided to focus resources on other titles in the portfolio to improve performance in areas where its market position is stronger," Richardson added in a statement.
"No other publications in the Archant Herts & Cambs portfolio are affected by these moves and we will be focussing our efforts in Herts on our local market-leading titles including the Welwyn Hatfield Times, Herts Advertiser and Comet series as well as the www.Herts24.co.uk website.
"Archant's commitment to other marketplaces remains unchanged and the company will continue to produce quality print titles and websites that are market-leading."
