Tarbell Center opens applications for 2027/28 AI journalism fellowship as record cohort begins placements

The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism has opened applications for its 2027/28 fellowship, inviting reporters and subject specialists eager to cover artificial intelligence’s impact on society.
The annual program features a three-month remote course on AI and journalism fundamentals starting each June, a week-long in-person summit, and a nine-month newsroom placement from September through May. Past hosts include outlets such as CBS News, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, MIT Technology Review, and TIME.
This announcement comes as a record 21 fellows begin placements at newsrooms in the US and UK, following intensive training and a summit with industry leaders in San Francisco. Fellows bring experience in investigative and tech reporting, editing, podcasting, and policy, and work under the direction of newsroom editors to produce deeply reported stories on AI.
