The Telegraph has developed and launched a series of widgets to virally distribute its online video content to social networks, blogs and across mobile devices.

The Telegraph TV widgets , which are compatible with 26 different networks and websites, will be made available for users to place on profile pages on Facebook and MySpace, as well as on blogs, desktops and iGoogle homepages.

The applications are also aimed at mobile users, Alison Reay, new media director of Telegraph Media Group, told an Association of Online Publishers (AOP) forum yesterday.

Individual applications have been created for Telegraph TV's news, business, arts and entertainment, sport, lifestyle and On This Day programming.

"We are distributing our content to a very different audience, to the people who might not usually see Telegraph TV content," said Reay.

The Telegaph also plans to move away from a separate player to instead embed all its video within articles over the next 12 to 15 months, Reay added.

She also claimed that combined viewing figures for the Telegraph TV section and the embedded video on the site suggested that 28 million videos are played on the site each month. However, no externally audited metric yet exists to verify this.

As part of this expansion of its video service Telegraph.co.uk has also created hub pages featuring all of its archive footage. The site's video content has also been made available on iTunes.
