The Edinburgh Minute, an independent local newsletter, is the latest publication to trade Substack for Ghost.

The daily newsletter goes out to 25,000 free subscribers curating original journalism and community news from Scotland's capital. It has inspired other models like The Melbourne Snap in Australia and The Belfest Drop in Northern Ireland.

In an email to his readers this week, founder Michael MacLeod explained the decision to migrate was based on a growing number of concerns about Substack including; complaints from paid readers about not receiving emails, the general direction of the platform, and a recent change to in-app payments that charges mobile subscribers an extra 30 per cent.

Ghost is a non-profit alternative for blogs and newsletters. It is used, namely, by Mill Media, a newsletter-first media company with six UK local news titles. Mill Media found its popularity on Substack before departing last year citing Ghost as a more cost-effective and customisable option.
