Building an online portfolio is important, whether you're just starting out in journalism and trying to land the first few paid commissions, or have been writing for a while.

The portfolio is your shop window, where you can showcase your skills and knowledge. This article by Bianca Fortis, independent journalist and associate editor at MediaShift, offers five tips for making your portfolio the best it can be.

Fortis recommends securing your own domain, as well as being picky with the stories you feature in the portfolio.

She explains a common mistake among young journalists in particular is to include every single piece they've ever done. "Emphasize your best work, the pieces that you’re proud of and the ones that are more likely to land you a job," she advises.
