Podcasting is becoming increasingly popular with audiences. From daily news updates to comedy sketches, there really is something out there to keep everyone entertained.

As we've seen more and more news organisations experimenting with it, Jane Bannester, a broadcast advisor at Ritenour High School, believes we should be introducing it into the journalism classroom – providing students with the skills they'll need to take into their future careers.

In this article on MediaShift, Bannester explains the ways she teaches podcasting to her students, thinking about how the format differs from radio, how to manage the equipment effectively and how to edit to tell a story in the most creative way for the listener.

She explains that the value of podcasting for students lies in the reach that they can achieve with just one episode – a lot further than university work usually goes.

"This trendy medium can be a gateway to strengthening core journalistic skills, but the great thing is, most of my kids never know it," she said.

"They just think they are being cool."
