There is a range of tools out there that can help with your social media newsgathering and verification, and the faster you discover them, the easier these tasks will become.

In this article from Brighton Journalist Works, journalist Isabella Cipirska summarises recent advice from Alastair Reid, managing editor at First Draft News, on finding and verifying news stories from social media.

He notes that aspiring journalists should treat everything they hear with scepticism, making sure to use the tools available to them to verify material.

He recommends using TinEye to investigate whether a photo has appeared on the internet before, and Jeffrey’s Exif Data to see the information or metadata hidden inside an image, which reveals the date and time it was taken, as well as the location.
