During her time as a Knight-Mozilla fellow, Sandhya Kambhampati spent some time researching how the processes of on-boarding and off-boarding work in newsrooms, and interviewing reporters, editors and producers to find out if, and how, they were documenting their learnings on the job for people who might take up their role or similar ones in the future.
By doing a survey and talking to people, Kambhampati found that many newsrooms didn't have set processes in place, and this caused valuable knowledge about workflows and projects to be lost along the way and new employees having to start from scratch.
The results of her research are available on GitBook, and she also provides a sample checklist for on-boarding and off-boarding, as well as examples and recommendations for implementing these processes in small, medium and large newsrooms.
