Starting out as a journalist in a new country can be a daunting task, especially if you haven't had an assignment abroad before.

First-time foreign correspondents should check out this tipsheet from Journalist's Resource for help with preparing for the job ahead of them.

It offers advice for how to source stories and data in a new place, as well as some helpful tips for coping with the administrative side of travelling abroad as a journalist (though it's aimed at US journalists so some of the visa advice will not apply across the board).

The tipsheet also highlights some good ideas for finding sources and learning more about your new country even when you don't speak the local language, such as reaching out to English-language schools in the area or expatriates.
