Data visualisation has become increasingly important for journalists due to the large amount of information it can deliver in one hit.

Illustrating text or numbers as diagrams or charts can be a more visually appealing way of presenting information, but it can also overwhelm the reader and make the story harder to understand if done wrong.

Funders and Founders information designer Anna Vital has put together a guide explaining different types of visualisations, from line charts to scatter plots ,and when each of them should be used.

She also points out five questions to bear in mind before picking a type of visualisation, for example: does it match the story's narrative, and will it look familiar to the reader?
