There's no arguing that GIFs are great for entertainment purposes (Giphy integration on Slack, anyone?), but the format can also be used to capture and convey a meaningful moment in the news in a more interactive way than using an image.

This tutorial from IJNet contributor Kevin Beaty explains how to make smoothly looped GIFs with Adobe Creative Suite.

Beaty also points out the limitations of the format, for example that it should be less than 1MB in size to load properly on the web, and outlines the two types of motion to aim for with a GIF (cyclical or oscillating).
