Few things are worse for a freelancer than pitching your next brilliant story idea to an editor, only to find it posted all over Twitter. Fortunately, these days this happens less than it used to, but it does still happen.

As an editor, it does not matter if you think the pitch is too quirky or not relevant for your publication. Giving it away on social media is unfair.

This is just one of several golden rules editors should live by when working with freelancers, as compiled by freelance journalist Andy Hirschfield writing for IJNet.

“By tweeting out an idea, you may inadvertently hand off our idea to someone else,” it reads.
