Starting out as a reporter can be difficult, especially when you are not sure of the skills you need to succeed.

Last summer, EJ Dickson, culture writer for Rolling Stone, sent out a tweet asking journalists and writers for the best reporting advice they had ever received. The Twitter thread resulted in thousands of responses, from both experienced journalists and freelance writers.

In this article for the Writing Cooperative, Jesse Harris has narrowed the pool of advice down to five top subjects and broken down why they are great pieces of advice and how to go about applying these to your writing.
