Having a strong portfolio is crucial for any journalist, and if most of your work is published online it's important to have copies of your articles, videos or podcasts to be protected in case the website hosting them has gone down.

To help journalists get into the habit of saving their work in a systematic manner, Edward McCain, digital curator of journalism at the Reynolds Journalism Institute, outlined 5 steps to simple archiving.

While his advice is designed for student journalists, it applies to anyone who hasn't started archiving their work yet.

"No one else is going to save your digital content. Journalists must take responsibility by incorporating these simple practices into their daily routine," he wrote.
