Knowing how to code is a valuable skill for any journalist working within the digital landscape, and although there are no easy shortcuts, having a strong basic understanding of HTML, CSS or JavaScript will improve your ability to find and tell stories in innovative ways.

Check out this advice from Chris Hister, director of digital development operations at Gatehouse, who gives four solid tips for those getting started with code.

He explains that it is important reporters don't overwhelm themselves with all the technical information there is to learn, noting that "even the world’s strongest development teams could fill a library with the things they don’t know".

Instead, journalists should take on the subject piece by piece, taking advantage of all the tutorials available online.
