Pitching your ideas to multiple news organisations can become a chore, especially if your query isn't answered for months, or not at all. So what happens when you finally build a successful relationship with an editor, writing stories for them time and time again, and they suddenly decide to quit?

In this article from The Write Life, reporter Tom Bentley highlights that freelancers then have one core objective – to win the confidence of the replacement editor.

He explains that there are various ways that freelancers can do this, but first of all they must be aware of the potential change of the direction within the company which may affect the kind of articles they should be pitching. The new editor may prefer a different style of writing, and want to 'freshen up' the material.

Additionally, he notes that freelancers should always be appreciative to the new editor for their time, and not to be worried about asking for feedback from them if their pitch was not successful.
