Podcasts can have different formats, but whether you choose to do one as a group discussion, a one-to-one interview or a story-based series, there are different ways to get listeners more involved in the conversation using social media.

During his time as an intern with NPR's product development team, Daniel Peterschmidt was tasked with monitoring audience behaviour and how people were interacting with NPR podcasts on social media. This exercise revealed that the podcasts with the highest number of likes, comments and shares tended to have discussion-based content and not necessarily a story-driven approach.

Using that as a starting point, NPR's Serri Graslie has put together a list of suggestions for managing your podcast's social media presence.

Her recommendations include involving the podcast's hosts more in growing the audience by making use of their individual Facebook and Twitter pages, encouraging them to personally respond to listeners on social media and knowing which platforms you should be present on to connect with certain communities.
