This checklist comes from the Columbia Journalism Review's TOW Center, and walks you through around 50 different steps you can take to identify who is behind a website - many of them not requiring any specialist tools and only needing a minute or two of your time.

"Following this checklist does not guarantee that you can unmask an owner of a website who does not want to be found, but it can help surface crucial clues and connections that can act as leads for further reporting," the guide states.

From looking at which regional laws apply in any terms and conditions, to checking metadata on PDFs and images on the site, to analysing social media accounts linked to the site, there is a wide range of ideas to work through. Click here to see the full checklist.
