In the US, sexual violence impacts one in five women and one in 71 men in their lifetime, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSRVC).
Reporting on such a complex and sensitive issue is difficult for journalists who may find themselves unsure of best practice. To help, the NSRVC has outlined five tips that journalists should consider when reporting on the topic.
For example, they suggest that rather than focusing solely on the topic of sexual violence, journalists should consider the causes, impacts and surrounding subjects to bring about awareness. This could include preventative and legislative options or survivor stories.
