As more data becomes available to journalists, knowing where to look for the stories these numbers can tell is an increasingly important skill in the newsroom.

Data journalism is about more than adding a chart at the end of your story, and this post by Tableau's Martha Kang for MediaShift looks at the seven types of stories grounded in data.

Aside from essential formats like comparisons over time, Kang also advises journalists to "compare the outliers", as "we are fascinated by things that aren’t like the others".
