Whether you're looking to keep on top of what the industry's movers and shakers are up to, getting a scoop or finding the topic for your next story, networking is an important and valuable part of journalism.

Steve Buttry, journalist and director of student media at Louisiana State University, has recently started a series of posts on his blog about the value of networking, explaining how it has helped his career and why it is important to have a diverse network.

In the first instalment of the series, Buttry says that while a journalist's work should speak for itself, it "doesn't help you unless someone is listening". He advises seeking out networking opportunities at journalism events and conferences, as well as following up by email or Twitter to stay in touch with relevant people you've met.
