"We are living in an era of widespread hacking and public shaming", points out Julia Angwin, senior reporter at ProPublica and author of the book 'Dragnet Nation: A quest for privacy, security and freedom in a world of relentless surveillance'.

These threats are a concern for all citizens, not just journalists, so Angwin wrote a post outlining some steps individuals can take to maximise protection of their data and communications online.

Angwin recommends updating any old software on your devices, setting passwords that are at least 10 characters long and that differ between your accounts in order to minimise the risks of a phishing attack, and switching to a cloud storage system such as sync.com, which, as opposed to Google Drive and Dropbox, is encrypted.
