Having natural light is crucial for photographers and multimedia journalists on assignments, but often they will have to make do and try to get the best results by using artificial light or using apps to enhance the quality of an image.

Steve Davis, photo editor for The Register-Mail, provides some advice for making the most of low-light situations in this post on GateHouse Newsroom.

His tips include tweaking the aperture and ISO settings if shooting on a DSLR – use the lowest aperture available and a high ISO – and letting the light or the lack of it do the work for you, for example by composing the photograph around a silhouette if you are shooting in the dark.
