When reporting on sensitive topics, such as gender issues or child trafficking, journalists have to be careful to show consideration and respect towards their interviewees, who might have suffered through or witnessed traumatising incidents.

Using the right language is also important, as there are often different terms that can be employed, such as in the case of "refugee" versus "migrant".

To help other reporters overcome some of these issues, IJNet's Ashley Nguyen has interviewed investigative journalist Priyanka Dubey about her upcoming book, in which she shares her experience with reporting on rape in India and her advice for writing about sensitive topics.

Dubey's tips include being genuine and giving your interviewee time to open up to you, conducting extensive research about the people and the area you'll be reporting on prior to going there and building a network of professional sources, particularly in areas where internet connectivity might be limited.
