Readers prefer seeing professional photos in stories instead of amateur ones, and captions provide important context and account for 30 per cent of the average time spent on the image, revealed a survey by the National Press Photographers Association.

David Brindley, managing editor of National Geographic magazine, recently offered Poynter some tips on effectively captioning photos.

He advised journalists to find out what makes the image interesting – and avoid writing a caption that summarises the accompanying article, as people might not bother reading the story.
