If you’re about to start freelancing abroad and have just been sent on your first international assignment, have a look at this checklist by international journalist Sherry Ricchiardi.

Writing for IJNet, Ricchiardi lists all the items that shouldn’t be missing from your bag as you embark on a foreign reporting assignment, from a lightweight laptop and notebooks that fit in your back pocket, to a digital recorder in case your smartphone is broken or out of battery.

She also advises journalists to carry a reliable, small bag that fits all the kit and can be taken as carry-on luggage on the plane. “Your livelihood tools are in that bag and you can’t afford to lose it,” she wrote.
