So you have a great idea for a story, but now the question turns to pitching it to an editor and getting their go-ahead.

Rest assured, you are not the first journalist to struggle in this department. A slick pitch can take time, practice and a little bit of advice to nail down.

To lend you a hand, John Lombard from MediaBistro has shared his 10 secrets to success when it comes to pitching.

Lombard suggests impressing the editor by showing you have a source on standby.

"If you're pitching a profile piece, it's best to make the editor aware you have access to the source - this lets them know you have all the pieces in place to execute the story," he said.
