The US-based online journalist community, Wired Journalists , will now be incorporated into the social journalism venture, Publish2, it was officially announced yesterday .
Ryan Sholin, who co-founded and built the network on Ning in January 2008, joined Publish2 as director of news innovation earlier this year, and discussions about integrating the brands developed. His co-founders, Howard Owens, and Zac Echola will stay on as editors-in-large. Owens is also an advisor to Publish2.
"At Publish2, the mission of connecting journalists based on common goals and interests will continue and - we hope - grow exponentially as this social network becomes a space for collaboration on real-world reporting as well as conversations about craft," Sholin wrote in his introductory post .
With the acquisition - the terms of which were not disclosed - come some changes, he said. From now on, the site will only be open to journalists and PR members will be asked to 'move on'.
"We thank our friends in public relations and marketing for their interest, but we're going to ask them to move on. Journalism students and faculty are welcome as always," Sholin said.
Wired Journalists members will have automatic access to Publish2 which currently provides online tools for collecting links, tweets, videos and news from any online source.
Additionally, some changes will be made to the forum feed, but it would continue to seek blog posts, news stories, photos, videos, examples of work, and stories of members' own success, Sholin said.
Publish2 launched in October 2008 , with the aim of promoting 'link journalism'. A range of new 'social journalism' tools were announced at the end of July. In April, new appointments were made to the original team: Howard Weaver joined the board, and Greg Linch will start as the producer next month.
