Police investigating alleged payments to police and public officials made two arrests today, including a 50-year-old man who works for HM Revenue and Custom and was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

The second arrest was of a 43-year-old woman at their home address in northwest London, on suspicion of aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office and suspicion of money laundering offences.

The arrests were made by officers from Operation Elveden , the police investigation into "allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials".

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is supervising Operation Elveden, which is "being run in conjunction" with the phone-hacking investigation Operation Weeting .

According to the Metropolitan Police Service statement, at the time of writing the two people arrested today were being questioned at a central London police station.

Police also confirmed that the arrests were "the result of information provided to police by News Corporation's Management Standards Committee".

"They relate to suspected payments to a public official and are not about seeking journalists to reveal confidential sources in relation to information that has been obtained legitimately."

Today's were the 28th and 29th arrests for Operation Elveden.
