ABC News 24 has lifted a geographic block on its online news stream covering the New Zealand earthquake, allowing access to viewers outside

According to a tweet from an ABC News account and a status update on an ABC News Facebook account , the broadcaster lifted the block from 1pm EST. At the time of writing Journalism.co.uk was able to view the online stream from the UK.

Earlier this month the block was also lifted after Cyclone Yasi hit North Queensland. At the time ABC outlined the reasons for the geo-block in a blog post. "The reason for this is straightforward," Stuart Watt, national editor according to Linkedin, says in the post.

"The ABC does not have the rights to stream much of the video content supplied by our partners outside Australia. It's simply too expensive for us to secure these rights, therefore we have to restrict access to the stream to people living in Australia - a process known as geoblocking.
