The SPUR Coalition (Standards for Publisher Usage Rights) has announced its largest expansion since launching in February, welcoming more than 40 new members, including media titans like The New York Times, Agence France-Presse, The Atlantic, The Observer and The Economist.
But read a little closer, and what makes this cohort really interesting is the diversity injected into the ranks. New additions also include major national bodies such as Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (The Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association), trade specialist titles (like French financial news title Zone Bourse), think tanks (RUSI also in the UK) and hyperlocal publishers (UK's Blog Preston).
New members also include news networks like the Independent Community News Network (ICNN), which itself has 120 independent, community and hyperlocal publishers, meaning those smaller titles are represented in discussions with AI companies.
