Archant will pay bonuses to its staff in the new year, as the company announced it will hit financial targets by the end of 2009.

The company, which employs 1,750 people in England, will pay all editorial and commercial staff, who are not already part of the publisher's management bonus scheme, an additional £200 in January.

"2009 has been a very difficult year for consumer media and Archant has not been spared the ravages of the recession. However, I am delighted to be able to tell you that we are on track to hit the targets that we set at the beginning of the year, before the full scale of the downturn had become apparent," says Adrian Jeakings, Archant chief executive in a memo to staff.

Archant will be in a strong position to take advantage of any economic recovery in the UK in 2010 thanks to the creativity and resourcefulness of its staff, Jeakings adds.

The bonus will be paid pro-rata to staff who work part-time and those who joined the company during the year.

In March this year the publisher implemented a pay freeze at its Norfolk, Suffolk, south west, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire newspaper operations and for some of its magazine division employees.
