The BBC College of Journalism has unveiled a new Postgraduate Student Journalism Innovation award, which will aim to recognise examples of innovation taking place in journalism training centres in the UK.

The award – the first for the college – will be given to work which shows "first-class public interest journalism", David Hayward, head of the college's Journalism Programme, said in a post announcing the new prize. "The world of journalism is undergoing a period of radical change. New technology, social media, data analysis and the way in which the mainstream media engage with their audiences, and the wider community, is having a profound effect on the way journalists operate," he said.

Hayward adds that the award's criteria is "deliberately broad" and "designed to encourage students to produce a piece of fantastic original journalism using the very latest skills and techniques".

"This could mean a visionary form of crowdsourced newsgathering, excellent multimedia and multiplatform working, infographics, data analysis, or a really clever use of social media. In short, anything that illustrates journalistic ingenuity," he said.

The closing date for the award is 30 April next year with entries judged by "senior media industry figures".

Hayward adds that the winning and shortlisted entries will be published on the websites for the College of Journalism and BBC Academy.

"The overall winner will also receive a unique prize that will no doubt give their career a well deserved boost". Details of how to enter are available on the BBC CoJo website.
