BBC Radios 4 and 5Live were among the big winners at last night's Sony Radio Academy awards, coming top in many of the categories for journalism and speech radio. Radio 4 's PM programme picked up the gold prize for best breaking news coverage, beating competition from BBC 5Live 's coverage of the death of Wales football manager Gary Speed, and three radio stations' coverage of last August's riots , on Real Radio North West, BRMB (Birmingham) and 5Live.

PM presenter Eddie Mair's interview with Julie Nicholson won best interview and Radio 4's Mike Thomson was named news journalist of the year.

5Live won awards for best speech programme (Stephen Nolan), speech broadcaster (Victoria Derbyshire) and speech radio personality (Danny Baker). The station's drivetime show was also named best news and current affairs programme.

Child of Ardoyne, a BBC Radio 3 documentary on the Troubles, told from the point of view of north Belfast children, won the gold award for best news feature or documentary.

The BBC World Service 's coverage of the royal wedding won the award for best live event coverage. In the best internet programme category, the Guardian 's Science Weekly podcast came top.
