Traffic to mlsnet.com , the website of the US soccer league, has undergone something of a surge since news of David 'Golden Balls' Beckham's move to LA Galaxy broke earlier in the year.

According to the comScore metric the news site attracted just over one million Age 15+ unique visitors (1,037,000) in July, 2007, up 117 per cent on the previous year's July figure of just 478,000.

The July 2006 figure had slipped to just 230,000 by December that year.

However, the following month (January, 2007) when LA Galaxy announced signing the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player on a five year contract, 808,000 people visited the site for news of the deal - a 252 per cent month-on-month increase.

Traffic then fluctuated wildly until July when Beckham made his debut for LA Galaxy in a friendly against Chelsea and the site broke a million visitors.

"David Beckham's impact on the MLS league's official website has been enormous," said Bob Ivins, EVP of International Markets at comScore, in a statement to the press .

"The player has single-handedly doubled the number of visitors to mlsnet.com versus last year, which let's not forget, was a World Cup year."
