Bectu has called for a guarantee from Scottish broadcaster STV that there will be no compulsory redundancies as it announces a restructure of
news teams and studio operations across the country
.
On Wednesday STV confirmed that its news programme for Edinburgh and the east of Scotland will continue after a successful trial of new technology.
This will see STV broadcast three 30 minute programmes each evening, one for the east, one in the west, and one for the north of Scotland, including a bulletin for the Dundee and Tayside area.
This also includes the rolling out of new technology to support these services, which has been trialled since May. However this decision means around 20 roles are now at risk within technical areas. Bectu said in a report on its website that this includes
those working in camera, sound, and craft editing
positions.
STV, which has launched a consultation with staff, confirmed to Journalism.co.uk that there will be no editorial impact.
The broadcaster has also said it will be
introducing seven new posts within its news and current affairs programme Scotland Tonight, which launches on 24 October. Within its restructure announcement STV added that its audience share at 6pm had gone "from strength to strength", increasing by 11 per cent year-on-year across Scotland.
According to STV news "is a hugely popular area of our website, with over half a million unique users visiting stv.tv/news each month".
