NUJ members at The Argus in Brighton have voted to ballot for action, following more proposed redundancies at the Newsquest title.

According to the Argus NUJ chapel, Chris Chandler, editor of the Leader series and deputy editor of the Argus, was made redundant this fortnight, and two more redundancies are being demanded of the news subs.

The subbing team will be down from 11 to nine: employees will find out who is going on 30 December.

Design studio work, which includes marketing material and promotional work, is now done at Newsquest's base in Southampton. Earlier this year, three sub-editors positions - two part-time and one full-time - were cut, coinciding with the move of all printing to Southampton. The redundancies could not be confirmed with Newsquest management: "We do not comment on our company business," the Argus told Journalism.co.uk.

Newsquest head office directed Journalism.co.uk's enquiry to the chief executive, who is currently out the country.
