Channel 4 has scooped 13 nominations for the Royal Television Society journalism awards, including a nod for its coverage of the Chilean miners rescue.

Other nominations for the broadcaster include Scoop of the Year, for its Dispatches programme Politicians For Hire, and News Coverage - International for coverage of the Haiti earthquakes, produced by ITN for Channel 4.

The BBC and ITV both received 11 nominations, with the BBC winning four nods across the two current affairs categories – home and international.

ITV's nominations include News Programme of the Year for ITV News At Ten and Specialist Journalist for Tom Bradby from ITV News.

Sky News – which has eight nominations – will compete with the BBC News Channel and Al Jazeera English for News Channel of the Year.

Channel 4 head of news and current affairs Dorothy Byrne said: "It's hugely gratifying for our news and current affairs coverage to be recognised with an unprecedented number of nominations.

"The range and depth of our original reporting is reflected in these nominations – we're delighted to have picked up two of the three in the international reporting category, as well as Scoop of The Year for Politicians for Hire."

Jonathan Munro, deputy editor of ITV News, said that the RTS nominations "reflect a very strong year" for ITV News.

"It’s particularly pleasing that our nominations span such a wide range of awards – home and international coverage, programme of the year, innovative news coverage, specialist and non-specialist correspondents.

"Any newsroom should be proud of its record in developing new talent, so we are especially pleased to have a nomination in the Young Journalist category, and to have the skills of one of our cameramen recognised too."

An awards ceremony hosted by Channel 4 newsreader Krishnan Guru-Murthy will take place on Wednesday 23 February at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
