Pro-am photojournalism website Demotix will join forces with award-winning start-up Publish2 as part of a new photo sharing network for newspapers.
Later this summer, according to an announcement from Publish2 , Demotix will start offering its images via Publish2's News Exchange , which allows newspapers to build "newswires" on specific topics or stories to share with readers, partners or customers.
The News Exchange, a development of Publish2's link-sharing network for journalists, and was launched as an alternative newswire service for print and web publishing in May . The new venture received a $1,000-grant in last month's Knight-Batten Innovation Awards .
Described as a newswire for "street journalism", Demotix was launched in January 2009 in response to a decline in foreign news coverage by the media and to provide on-the-ground multimedia from major news events.
The arrangement with News Exchange will allow news organisations to buy photos for coverage of news events in the US and internationally.
"Newspapers seeking alternative sources of news photos have already recognized the huge benefits of sharing photos directly, which News Exchange will enable them to do now on a national scale and with much greater efficiency (and no more emailing photos back and forth!)," writes Scott Karp, Publish2 founder, in a blog post.
The deal will also give greater exposure to Demotix's community of users, who receive 50 per cent of revenue from any images sold through the agency.
"We have a shared vision of democratising news gathering and distribution. Activating our 3,000-odd global contributors across the News Exchange platform brings every corner of the world to News Exchange and gives voice to our community across the US," says Demotix founder Turi Munthe in the post.
