The Electoral Commission has placed Zac Goldsmith's election spending under case review, it has confirmed.

The move follows a joint investigation by Channel 4 and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism which calls into question the Richmond MPs election campaign costs. A report on the investigation aired on Channel 4 News last Thursday.

The following day, Channel 4 News held a live interview with Goldsmith in the studio, who had said in an interview with Sky News the previous day that he had followed the "letter and spirit of the law" and called the Channel 4 report "profoundly unethical".

Having received an allegation from the bureau, the commission has spent the last few days performing an initial assessment of the case.

It has now confirmed the case has moved to 'case review', the second stage of the allegation process after the initial assessment suggested there may be a breach.
