A 37-year old woman arrested this morning in connection with press payments to the police is widely reported to be former News of the World crime editor Lucy Panton.
Officers from Operation Elveden, the Metropolitan police's investigation into corrupt police payments, made the arrest at 6:15 this morning at a residential address in Surrey. It is the seventh by the team.
Panton joined the News of the World from the People in 2002 and was made crime editor in 2005, a role she held until the closure of the tabloid in July 2011.
News of the World parent company News International declined to comment.
Operation Elveden is one of three Met police operations connected to the press, with Operation Weeting investigating phone hacking and Operation Tuleta computer hacking.
Officers from Weeting have made 16 arrests and officers from Tuleta have made one .
