US media giant Gannett is launching a network of new hyperlocal sites within its broadcasting arm. The community focused sites, powered by DataSphere technology , have been produced to accompany 10 markets served by Gannett's television stations, including Washington, Atlanta and Tampa.

Content will be focused on user-generated material, with residents able to inform others about what news and events are happening in the local area.

Dave Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting said the launch continues their focus on local audiences.

"Providing neighborhood news and information is a vital part of our responsibility as local media companies," says Lougee in a release . "By partnering with DataSphere, we will be able to extend the services we offer to our viewers and advertisers, making use of our online presence to provide an easy way for them to keep up with local events and connect with each other."

Lougee said hyperlocal news sites also offer local businesses the chance to more effectively target potential customers.

Gannett publishes 82 daily U.S. newspapers, including USA TODAY, more than 600 magazines and other non-dailies and 23 television stations in 19 US markets.

Gannett is also the parent company of the UK regional news provider Newsquest, which has more than 200 weekly newspapers, magazines and trade publications, as well as a network of web sites.
