The general secretary of global press freedom group the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will leave the organisation next year, it has been announced.

Aidan White, who has been with the organisation for more than 20 years, will depart on 31 March 2011.

His leaving was arranged at an executive meeting of the IFJ last weekend, the organisation has confirmed.

White, who joined the IFJ in 1987, worked as part of the organisation's executive committee, which is annually elected.

The IFJ represents more than 600,000 members in 125 countries and works to defend press freedom internationally via journalism trade unions across the globe.
