GMG Radio, owners of the UK's network of Real Radio stations, has launched a new training scheme for budding radio journalists. GMG Radio's Futures Factory will take on would-be presenters, journalists, digital editors and broadcast producers, as well as those who want a career in radio sales and marketing, for a 12-week "hands on" training programme.

Based in Manchester, the scheme will bring participants into GMG Radio's Salford Quays studio and give participants training from working professionals once or twice a week. GMG stations Real Radio Yorkshire, Real Radio North West, Smooth Radio North West and Rock Radio Manchester will primarily be involved in the scheme.

The programme will look to take on 15 people, but its aim is to find fresh, future talent for the radio industry and as such more applicants may be accepted, a GMG spokeswoman told Journalism.co.uk. Successful applicants will be assessed at an initial training day on 14 June before the course begins on 28 June.

"Fresh talent and fresh ideas go together - our sector is moving through rapidly changing times and we’re looking for driven people who get the multi-platform space we now inhabit. GMG Radio's investment into the development of great people extends beyond our current teams to new entrants - we see that as crucial to our continued success and the evolution of our industry," says GMG Radio Northwest managing director Andy Carter in a release.

Applications for the scheme can be made online before the deadline of 1 June and more details are available on the GMG Radio website .
